Application Moment instructions

You’ll be assigned a particular day in class for your application moment oral presentation as follows:

  1. Locate an article that analyses a current and outstanding example of a brand message: ad, sales promotion, direct response (including internet), package, customer service, sponsorship, experience, and so forth. Find an article that gives performance metrics regarding the communication piece effectiveness. Note that increased company sales are not as good an indicator as more related measures.
  2. Write a one page paper to include the following list of items. Include a copy of the piece with your paper: If it is from the broadcast media, a video or audio reproduction is fine.
    • What the piece is and the communication message
    • Who is the sponsoring firm
    • Where you found it
    • Who is the target market
    • Why the piece was effective at building the brand using performance metrics. If you can't find any, locate a different communication piece. It is easier to find an article with metrics first, then locate the piece.
    • Use concepts from the chapter that is assigned reading for that week. Don't "teach" the concepts, but simply integrate them. You can also bring in other concepts from the book, but the paper must relate to the current readings.
  3. Give a 5-7 minute power point presentation to the class on your assigned day, showing your piece, and explaining your findings.

Example of a good presentation: Robby Van Hook

Application Moment evaluation
The best papers will contain current examples (not older than 2007) that are remarkable in some way, versus the same old ad we see everywhere. They will include all the assignment criteria and be good examples that bring alive the book concepts of the week. They will be related to the class as indicated by the use of correct terminology and discussion that relates them to marketing communication theory and concepts. They will also be well-written and organized. I will use the following to grade your presentation:
